Uses: 

Bupropion is primarily used to treat depression and works by helping restore the balance of certain natural substances (dopamine, norepinephrine) in the brain.

How to Use Bupropion HCl Oral:

  1. Read Instructions: Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before you start using bupropion and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
  2. Administration: Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually twice a day. If you have stomach upset, you may take this medication with or after a meal or snack.
  3. Timing: Take the first dose as soon as you wake up in the morning and the second dose at least 8 hours later. Avoid taking it late in the day to prevent insomnia.
  4. Regular Intake: Take this medication regularly to get the most benefit. To help you remember, take it at the same times each day.
  5. Tablet Handling: Swallow the tablets whole. Do not crush or chew the tablets as this can release all of the drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects.
  6. Dosage: The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. To reduce the risk of side effects, your doctor may start you at a low dose and gradually increase it.
  7. Do Not Alter Dosage: Do not increase your dose or use this drug more often or for longer than prescribed.
  8. Gradual Discontinuation: Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. Your dose may need to be gradually decreased.
  9. Effectiveness: It may take 4 weeks or longer to get the full benefit of this drug. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens.

Side Effects:

  • Common: Dry mouth, sore throat, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, ringing in the ears, headache, decreased appetite, weight loss, constipation, trouble sleeping, increased sweating, or shaking (tremor).
  • Harmless Effect: An empty tablet shell may appear in your stool.
  • Blood Pressure: This medication may raise your blood pressure. Check your blood pressure regularly.
  • Serious: Fast/pounding/irregular heartbeat, mental/mood changes (anxiety, agitation, confusion, unusual behavior/thinking, memory loss), unusual weight loss or gain.
  • Severe: Seizure, eye pain/swelling/redness, widened pupils, vision changes.
  • Allergic Reaction: Rash, itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

Warnings:

  • Suicidal Thoughts: Antidepressants can help prevent suicidal thoughts/attempts but may cause new or worsening depression or other mental/mood symptoms, especially in people younger than 25.
  • Monitoring: Be watchful for new or worsening symptoms, especially when starting a new antidepressant or changing the dose.
  • Smoking Cessation: If you are using bupropion to quit smoking and experience severe symptoms, stop taking it and contact your doctor immediately.

Precautions:

  • Allergies: Inform your doctor if you are allergic to bupropion or any other allergies.
  • Medical History: Inform your doctor about your medical history, especially of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, kidney or liver problems, drug/alcohol use, seizures, or a family history of glaucoma.
  • Sedative Withdrawal: Do not use this medication if you are suddenly stopping sedatives or alcohol.
  • Dizziness: This drug may cause dizziness. Avoid alcohol and be cautious with activities requiring alertness.
  • Older Adults: May be more sensitive to side effects like dizziness and memory loss.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Discuss with your doctor the risks and benefits of using this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Interactions:

  • MAO Inhibitors: Avoid MAO inhibitors during treatment with bupropion.
  • Drug Interactions: Certain drugs (e.g., codeine, pimozide, tamoxifen) may interact with bupropion.
  • Lab Tests: This medication may interfere with certain medical/lab tests.

Overdose:

  • Emergency: If someone overdoses and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing, call 911. For less severe cases, contact a poison control center immediately.

Notes:

  • Do Not Share: Do not share this medication with others.
  • Monitoring: Lab tests may be necessary to check blood pressure and liver function.
  • Missed Dose: If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next dose at the regular time. Do not double up doses.
  • Storage: Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Keep medications away from children and pets.
