Uses

Oseltamivir is an antiviral medication used to treat and prevent influenza (flu) caused by influenza virus types A and B. It is effective for:

  • Treatment: In individuals 2 weeks of age and older who have had flu symptoms for 2 days or less.
  • Prevention: In those who have been exposed to the flu but do not yet show symptoms.

Note: Oseltamivir will not treat the common cold.

Warnings

  • Duration of Symptoms: Use oseltamivir for flu symptoms that have lasted less than 2 days.
  • Monitoring: Watch for unusual behavior, confusion, or hallucinations, especially in children.
  • Regulation: Avoid purchasing oseltamivir online or outside the U.S., as these sources may not follow FDA regulations and could contain dangerous ingredients.

Before Taking Oseltamivir

  • Flu Shot: Oseltamivir is not a substitute for an annual flu shot, which is recommended by the CDC.
  • Allergies: Do not use if allergic to oseltamivir.
  • Age Restrictions:
    • Not recommended to prevent flu in children younger than 3 months.
    • Not recommended to treat flu in children younger than 2 weeks unless advised by a doctor.

Consult Your Doctor If You Have:

  • Kidney disease or are on dialysis.
  • Heart or chronic lung disease.
  • Brain swelling or other neurological conditions.
  • A weakened immune system.
  • Hereditary fructose intolerance.
  • Received a nasal flu vaccine (FluMist) in the past 2 weeks.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

  • Pregnancy: The effects of oseltamivir on an unborn baby are not well-known, but flu during pregnancy can lead to complications. Consult your doctor.
  • Breastfeeding: It’s unclear if oseltamivir passes into breast milk. Consult your doctor before use.

How to Take Oseltamivir

  • Timing: Start as soon as flu symptoms appear.
  • Dosage:
    • Treatment: Take every 12 hours for 5 days.
    • Prevention: Take every 24 hours for 10 days or as prescribed.
  • Administration: Take with a full glass of water. It can be taken with food to prevent stomach upset. Shake the liquid form well before measuring.
  • Full Course: Complete the entire prescribed course, even if symptoms improve.

Storage:

  • Capsules: Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
  • Liquid: Store in the refrigerator for up to 17 days or at cool room temperature for up to 10 days.

Missed Dose

  • Take the missed dose as soon as possible unless your next dose is due in less than 2 hours. Do not double up doses.

Overdose

  • Seek emergency medical attention or call the Poison Help line.

What to Avoid

  • Do not use the nasal flu vaccine (FluMist) within 48 hours after taking oseltamivir.

Serious Side Effects (Seek Immediate Medical Attention):

  • Allergic reactions (hives, breathing difficulty, swelling)
